Bodegas Campillo has just appointed Rioja-born-and-bred oenologist Ruth Rodríguez Ascacíbar as the winery's Head Winemaker.

Ascacíbar has a degree in Agricultural Engineering and Oenology from the University of La Rioja. Upon finishing her studies, she decided to pursue her career overseas, making wine in many different countries, including Chile, Italy and New Zealand.

Upon returning to Spain, Ascacíbar worked at many prominent wineries, such as Marqués de Cáceres and Dos Victorias, where she produced the wines Elías Mora (under the Toro Designation of Origin) and José Pariente (under the Rueda Designation of Origin).

Some three years later, Ascacíbar joined Grupo Artevino, in charge of the wineries in Castilla y León, Finca Villacreces (Ribera de Duero Designation of Origen), as well as Bodegas Vetus (Toro Designation of Origen).

Before making the move to Bodegas Campillo, Ascacíbar returned to her home region, La Rioja, in 2009, to work on a Grupo Artevino project at Bodegas Izadi and Bodegas Orben, both being Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin wineries

For Ruth, becoming a part of Grupo Faustino, and of Bodegas Campillo in particular 'marks the start of a new and very exciting stage in my career. For me, wine and vines are not only my profession but also my passion, so to be at the head of an iconic winery, such as Campillo, and to be able to further pursue my expertise in this area, which I know so well and with which I am deeply in love, (right in the heart of Rioja Alavesa), is truly a gift.”

Francisco Honrubia, CEO of Grupo Faustino, said 'we are very excited that Ruth is joining our team at the helm of Bodegas Campillo. Her knowledge of international wine making, her extensive career and her experience in the different Spanish Designations of Origin are of great value to our wine making project at Campillo. We will bring our expertise in making premium wines and her style and vision together, and we are certain that this will be reflected in enormously successful wines'. Honrubia concluded by saying that this appointment represents a 'milestone in our Group, as she is the first female Head Winemaker in one of our wineries, and will bring with her a dynamic and innovative work style'
